It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? Well, yesterday we spent our day in Yurt-ville and it was pretty exciting. Things are popping, as they say. And while there are headaches (like the shower kit that has the drain on the wrong side, but it’s an internet only item, and thus will take forever and a day to get replaced, and we need it now, sigh), we’re really…really…really excited. And even better, our chickens are too. Here’s a peek of them taking a walk on the wild side…just because they can. Seriously.

Thrill Seeking Chickens & An Update!
Hello Again!
Did you miss us? We missed you… At least I think we have. It’s really kind of been a blur, and this peaceful moment…as I write this, is probably the calm before the storm. As most of you prep for the holidays, wrapping those final presents (if that is your cup of tea), pack for that flight and so on…well…we’re booking U-Haul cargo vans (hmmm, wonder if the insurance covers really large sheep?), calling Home Depot because our pedestal sink arrived with just the basin (“oh…even though the picture shows it as a complete sink…the faucet and stand come separately!?!” ::ahem.i.hate.home.depot.right.now::)…

Save the Date!
That’s right! After months of planning, and waiting, and stressing…we’re finally here! The deck is just about finished, and looks absolutely beautiful (and indestructible), which is a good combo. So, we’d like to extend an invite to all of you yurt fans, or building fans, or just “want to visit the country” fans. If you want to attend a yurt raising, here is your chance. And we’ll have a nice hot bonfire, and a nice hot meal to bribe you. Besides good times, of course! ![]()

Why We’re Thankful.
Sometimes the main purpose of Thanksgiving can be obscured by the panicked cooking for in-laws, the piles upon piles of food, the pant-popping-fullness that comes from such an absurd meal, all overlaid with an ever present TV in the background. This year especially, (or do we always think that?), I get the sense that people just want some downtime from all of that stress and stimulus. Wherever you are, take a moment to sift through the chaos, and find some peace.

Who Needs Hardwood Floors?
When you have plywood? Before you go thinking I’m crazy (like, ahem, Mike did), more and more residential homes are using sanded plywood with a polyurethane coating as flooring. It’s far more budget friendly, and actually looks pretty cool. And if you end up not liking it, or if your budget increases, you can use it as your sub-floor for the traditional hardwood plank application. But this isn’t a new or edgy concept.

Cookin’ With Gas
Mike and I love to cook. Which is a good thing, considering eating out is a huge luxury and time suck these days. One of the things we miss the most about our old apartment (there aren’t many things, but this is one) is the gas stove. For some reason, it seems like most places here have electric and to put it lightly, electric stoves suck. Gas stoves heat up faster, get hotter, and are generally just more fun to cook on, in my opinion.

Moving to a Smaller Home Footprint
At the end of this month (fingers crossed), Mike and I will be moving into a much, much smaller home. Or as some have been saying, a tent.
It’ll be an adventure for sure, but I have to say, I’m actually pretty excited about less space. We started dating in NYC, where small square footage is the norm. You don’t spend a lot of time at home, so it doesn’t matter as much. And now that we have experience with the larger option of 3 bedrooms, 2 baths…small is appealing.

Now Casting: Best Wood Stove for VA Winter
Candidates must be: priced reasonably, able to show up for job within 30 days, fairly attractive, smaller in stature, have a transparent face that can warm a roughly 700 sq ft room (and entertain two people, one cat and a future dog), can be a little rough around the edges as long as he/she is willing to work, not high maintenance, OK with non-smoking indoors, and has fairly good ash hygiene. Efficiency is a huge plus.

Blueberry & Red Tape
You know that Frost poem about the road less taken? Well, I’m here to say, choosing that road isn’t all peaches and cream. For all of those urban dwellers dreaming of a farm, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. OK, perhaps it’s not much of a secret…since we were told this too. But I’m going to reinforce it here, since we’re walking that path at the moment. Buying or renting land and then, putting a home on it? ….

Why a Yurt?
Yurts have been around for thousands of years, but they mainly hung out in Mongolia and hippie communes until fairly recently. Their march into the quasi mainstream started with state parks that wanted an alternative to log cabins and tent camping. Quick to build (usually a day once you have deck and kit ready), easy to keep warm, moveable if needed and “quirky” – they were an instant hit. This is how we learned about the “thing” that is a yurt.
