Now that our little monster…ahem…puppy, is getting older, her energy levels are also growing by leaps and bounds. Which leads me to suggest something. Do not get a puppy right before winter, it’s terrible planning. We scurry outside for farm chores, bundled up, and she shivers at us while we break ice, throw hay and gather eggs. The last thing any of us wants is a long walk, which is how we tired her out in the beginning. Enter Mike and his bike.

Eva and Mike: A Photo Shoot
Country life in the mountains (during the winter no less) can be a bit tiring for a little puppy. And then you add in photo shoots, and whew. Talk about a full life! But aside from a little hand chewing, our Eva is pretty tolerant of these things. Especially if they include a snuggle in Mike’s jacket after a long, cold walk. So, for you, here is an update on Eva, now 13 wks old and a full convert to country life (poop! tree climbing! sheep kisses! chickens! digging! oh my!!)

Frosted Winter Mornings.
Ever see that movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? Yes? But you don’t want to admit it? OK, I get that. But remember that ad slogan for diamonds? Frost Yourself. That’s what I thought as I uploaded these photos for you guys. I wish they could capture how beautiful it is to step outside here in the early morning, and see sparkling frost everywhere. If it weren’t so freaking cold, it’d be even more magical. But nothing is perfect, eh?

What To Do With Leftover Halloween Pumpkins
Do you happen to have un-carved pumpkins sitting on your porch right now? We do. I consider them zombie pumpkins, not dead….but not alive, either. Or, perhaps they are guilt pumpkins…guilt at all of the things I should be doing with them (roasted pumpkin seeds are the best!). But with a puppy, and a yurt, and lots of work…pumpkins are kind of low on the list. Good thing they aren’t low for others in the Kelly farm family.

Eva & Her Disgruntled Sheep, Fiona
It’s too bad. Eva has made friends with pretty much everyone on the property…except for Fiona. If Fiona had her way, she’d stomp Eva into a little pile of mush and then keep on grazing. Now, keep in mind, Fiona isn’t a mean sheep. She’s actually really sweet. But, she appears to have a pretty big distrust of dogs. And Eva really, REALLY wants to be friends. What’s a puppy to do??

A Family Trip Up the Hillside
A very, very steep hillside. Mike and Eva had taken the trip up in the morning, which wore her out amazingly well (she slept for three hours…heaven!). So for our afternoon walk, Mike wanted me to go with him. Since we usually let the sheep and goats out to forage during the day, they decided to come with. The chickens accompanied us about half the way, then got bored and went back to the house. They probably had a crazy chicken party and invited their chicken friends.

Mushball Has a Name!
We’ve sat with this for a bit…and there were some really good name candidates. My Mom suggested Chiquita, which we liked…but just couldn’t put into practice. Mush is an adorable nickname, but doesn’t work as well when she’s getting into something (which she does, a lot!). Jasmine is a really sweet name, but doesn’t fit the country dog that she’s becoming. But, the magic of the right name happened yesterday, thanks to Mike!
