OK, he isn’t a polar bear, he’s a Great Pyrenees pup (only 9 wks old!) and his name is Max. He’s a big mush and has done great with everyone thus far. And no. Before you ask, he did NOT stay inside last night. He slept in a hay box by the very chickens he’ll be guarding. Then today, he hung out with the goats and took a walk with Eva. And our new goats are so sleek and sexy, they look like runway models compared to Shy Guy and Boomer. Who are in LOVE.

Meet Our Polar Bear & Model Goats!
Guest Post: From Rat Race to Field Mice
(A Guest Post by Angie Esler-Whelan of BreedBaby) Where we live now is sort of like living in a big drum. It’s cozy enough in its own way, but the noise from the outside echoes and vibrates throughout our entire existence. If it isn’t the thumping of pipes on the bathroom walls, it’s the thunderous shaking of the neighbor’s garage doors opening and closing each time they wheel out into the suburban Las Vegas wasteland.

Hello Again!
Did you miss us? We missed you… At least I think we have. It’s really kind of been a blur, and this peaceful moment…as I write this, is probably the calm before the storm. As most of you prep for the holidays, wrapping those final presents (if that is your cup of tea), pack for that flight and so on…well…we’re booking U-Haul cargo vans (hmmm, wonder if the insurance covers really large sheep?), calling Home Depot because our pedestal sink arrived with just the basin (“oh…even though the picture shows it as a complete sink…the faucet and stand come separately!?!” ::ahem.i.hate.home.depot.right.now::)…

Taking a Little Break.
Would you believe we’ve been talking every day for almost six months, with more than 150 posts under our belts and nary a break? That’s one solid relationship! Well, it pains me to admit this, but between the home site prep, yurt finalizing projects, animals, keeping a busy business going, a puppy and the approaching holidays…we find ourselves a tad in over our heads. And as in any relationship, it’s important to be honest. So this is us saying, we need a little break.

Someone Else is Laying!
For about a month now, we’ve been getting on average 3 or 4 beautiful, large brown eggs. It’s obvious they’re coming from the new hens. They take their jobs seriously, heading to their laying box every morning, while the lazy hens play in the yard. But. Someone (or should I say, some hen?) has apparently been inspired. Mike went out the other day, and there was a fifth MUCH smaller brown egg. But from whom???
Guest Post: Culture Shock – Moving from the Suburbs to a Rural Farm
(A Guest Post by All Hallows Farm) Have you ever noticed how a lot of people use Wal-mart as in indicator of civilization? Well, for the purpose of this entry, that is what we are going to do. I am neither for, nor against Wal-mart as a corporation, it is just something, that as Americans we can all probably relate to.

Hiking Buffalo Mountain
Since we moved here, we’ve been instructed (sometimes politely, other times quite firmly) to hike Buffalo Mountain. But somehow, we just haven’t done it. Must be those chickensgoatsheephikestotoprockpuppy and such. But finally, on Thanksgiving Day, we were inspired by our visiting family to go hike the Buffalo! And we all had a great time, and came home fully ready to tear apart some turkey. End of story. Scroll down to hear Mike’s story of the Buffalo.
Pigs.
That’s about all there is to it. We pig sat our neighbor’s three feeder pigs the other day, and this is what we saw. And it’s about all we had to do for them too. Made us very jealous, and wishful that our animals were as low maintenance. Although they were driving Mike and his OCD tendencies crazy by standing in their food. Which in turn was highly entertaining. Hah!

Mike + Eva + Bicycle = Heavenly Quiet.
Now that our little monster…ahem…puppy, is getting older, her energy levels are also growing by leaps and bounds. Which leads me to suggest something. Do not get a puppy right before winter, it’s terrible planning. We scurry outside for farm chores, bundled up, and she shivers at us while we break ice, throw hay and gather eggs. The last thing any of us wants is a long walk, which is how we tired her out in the beginning. Enter Mike and his bike.
