Detergent Inspiration

laundry-detergent

How bout some green living (or back-to-the-land, depending on your terminology of choice) talk. Do you, or have you ever thought of making your own detergent? I have (thought of, that is). As someone with super sensitive skin, seems like a good choice. We already go with the ultra yuppie options…which by the way, highly recommend the Method pump detergent. So convenient and cleans your clothes well too!

But when we were at the Food Lion on our last shopping trip, they didn’t have Method detergent…so I just grabbed whatever looked reasonable. We don’t use a ton of detergent, nor wash clothes everyday like a big family might. Yet, we still go through this stuff pretty quickly and then you’re left with a giant plastic jug. The more plastic I cut out of our lives, the more I want to cut out…it just seems so wasteful. And that’s without getting into the health concerns of what it might be leeching into your food/water/etc.

So I’m really leaning towards making our own. It’s less wasteful, cheaper and I would think, at least a little bit empowering. But does it clean as well? That is the question.

Here are some recipes:

Natural Home & Garden Detergent, Stain Spray and Bleach Substitute

PS. Awhile back, I learned a trick for stinky gym clothes (any of those wicking fabrics that hold stink)…pour a cup of distilled white vinegar in with a big load and it’ll cut the smell, as well as, act as a fabric softener. And no, your clothes won’t smell like a pickle.

People drink out of mason jars, make their own yogurt/cheese/butter/you-name-it and hey, it might not be dry rub brisket, but the BBQ here is pretty freaking good. She has dreams of a dairy cow, a shady hammock to read and a happy dog at her side.

    Hey Erin,
Been using perfume free, dye free detergent for years, but didn’t know about the distilled vinegar. I’ll try that. Thanks! Have a nice Labor Day Weekend!
