Oops, too slow…looks like Mike beat you to the punch! We were perhaps a little city slicker at the Hillsville ABC store the other day, when we saw a whole section of moonshine. OK, the giggling and pointing was city slicker….me making Mike pose for this stellar shot? Smacks of tourist. But we’re not, we’re here to stay…muahahaha!!!
When we checked out (with gin for the blueberry shrub, vodka for the limencello, bourbon for Mike’s old fashioneds and apple pie moonshine), I’m pretty sure we came across as lushes. The fact that it was barely 11AM probably made it a bit worse. Our very friendly check out woman even made a crack about Mike’s loose-handed signature and his state of constitution at that point.
BUT! All of those alcohols were purchased for a good cause!! Recipe testing! Anyhow. Since this is a post about moonshine, I have a confession. I haven’t had that moonshine yet…
Did you catch that? I said “that” moonshine, which implies I might have tried a different one. And I did. Secret moonshine, and it was reeeeeeal good.
Have I mentioned I love it here? It’s beyond cool.

I was thinking bout trying to make some next spring. I have no idea what I’m doing other than watching some documentaries and reading a book about it. If I manage to make it I’ll give you some, but only after I test it on myself. I’d be happy to test yours to!
Hmmm….becoming a moonshine distillery hadn’t really occurred to me (yet), BUT we’re always up for taste tests! We’re doing baby steps and trying out beer brewing in the fall…and I have dreams of mushroom growing. Diversity makes for some awesome trading possibilities, right?!
It all depends on the type of mushrooms. J/k I don’t like any type of mushroom. But I’ll trade for some of that beer!
Psh, suuuuure… But you got yourself a deal on the beer!
For those of us who haven’t had moonshine, could you give a flavor profile or what it tastes like so we can just imagine it!!
Liquid fire? With a hint of rye…
I’ve had some “apple pie” shine that tastes really good, almost rum-like. Then I’ve had goold ol’ clear distilled moonshine that tastes, as Erin put it, like Liquid Fire. I’m a rummy myself, but if you like bourbon you may like moonshine.
Dear Erin and Mike
we love your blog and feel your love for “the dream”. We own property in Albermarle and used to own in Carroll Cty. Made a tough decision to trade Carroll for Albermarle after a power move that the APCO (Appalachian Power Company ) made on us and others- total turn off. Anyway- we found beauty in Albermarle albeit a smaller piece of land. We will bring our cats and horse here some day. Our rainbows on Rainbow Hill are wonderful and we’ll miss them, but when we go, it will be time to change (again). We share with you a love for many natural things, including a beautiful black sky that reveals the stars. Its great that you are following your dream. Enjoy each moment. Maria and Carla
Yep, we have APCO here…and it was the only non-local setup that we had to do. They definitely aren’t very user friendly, but that’s really all I can say about them so far. So glad you like the blog, it’s great fun to find people who share your enthusiasm. And Floyd County is definitely chock full of sustainable, animal loving people. Keep up the great work on your own site, I’m so glad I’ve gotten to be a part of manifesting your dream…the sky is the limit!
My hubby and I dream of moving one day to floyd and building a self sustainable homestead!!
It’s a beautiful place — and the perfect spot to homestead! If you’re ever in the area visiting, let us know and we can meet up.
