For those who know me well, you know that chickens and I are kindred spirits that belong together. Growing up, my only hands on chicken experience was when I was in middle school/high school and used to dog/cat/chicken sit for a friend who lived right outside our neighborhood. I’d bike over there every morning, and open the coop, and out came a half dozen chickens so happy to see me and the morning. They’d come out, cluck around and start hunting for bugs and stuff. And there was even a chicken named Luna that was a good friend. She’d follow me around as I did the morning chores and was more of a dog than a chicken. But not only was it a fun rewarding experience to see the chickens every morning, I got the first hand experience of getting fresh eggs every single morning. WOW… what a deal! A small happy, cool animal that eats bug pests and gives you breakfast everyday. I ended up looking forward to everytime that family would go away for vacation so I could get my “farm time”. Introducing: Le Squidge
Above are the many faces of the Squidgy, my buddy, my pal and my most favorite cat ever. Granted, he has had many names in his 15+ years. First, “Oliver”, when he was just a stray kitten from Camden. Then “Dumb Cat”, when he became the playmate (thing?) for two boys. Which might explain why he’s so balanced and calm in his senior years?
Happy Floyd Fest Weekend
We won’t be making it this year, as we have visitors arriving in mere hours (yay!), who just want to kick back at the house with a glass of wine. But from all of the hubbub surrounding Floyd Fest, I think it’s highly likely we’ll be there NEXT year. I’ve never seen such a to-do about a festival (I’ve gotten the “you going to Floyd Fest??” question from countless people, not just in Floyd), but from all appearances, Floyd Fest is far more than a music festival.
Introducing: The Dirty Noodle
Aww, she’s shy. And filthy. This is one of our cats, acquired from a back alley (more or less) in NJ. Appropriately, she entered our lives on Halloween. Coincidence? We think not.

Stocking UP!
Disclaimer: The Above Pig was not harmed in the making of this post. However, he probably found his way to pork chops shortly after his picture was taken, last year, when we visited Glasbern Farm in PA. So why is his smug mug here on the blog? Because I don’t have a picture of the piggy that we will soon be picking up from the butcher. But that’s just as well, right?
Fact: July is HOT
Were you aware of that? If you were one of the lucky people that saw 100+ temps this past week, then I’m pretty sure you’re aware. Even up here in Paradise…I mean, Floyd…it really didn’t get too, too hot. But Facebook updates made me very aware of just how steamy/miserable/like the surface of the sun it was in NJ.

Food Cravings
I love Asian food. Japanese. Vietnamese. Thai. Korean. And Chinese food. Preferably the authentic kind, but I’ll take strip mall Chinese when desperate.
And people? As awesome and amazing as Floyd, and surrounding areas are with their biscuits and BBQ and free range….there aren’t a lot of Asian options. I knew this when we moved here. Really good Asian food was one of my big reasons for looking at the Northwest (my year in Seattle introduced me to some of the best food, not even NYC could match it). But, Floyd, Virginia had just a few more (OK, a lot more) pluses and check marks on its side. But now that the reality is sinking in after a month here?….

You Lookin’ at Me?
So. Inquiring minds want to know, when you think of dragonflies…what do you think? Summer twilights with a cool drink in hand? Tubing down a river? Cute collectibles? Beautiful colors, softly whirring wings?

Moonshine? Anyone? Anyone?
Oops, too slow…looks like Mike beat you to the punch! We were perhaps a little city slicker at the Hillsville ABC store the other day, when we saw a whole section of moonshine. OK, the giggling and pointing was city slicker….me making Mike pose for this stellar shot? Smacks of tourist. But we’re not, we’re here to stay…muahahaha!!!
Butterfly!
I wish I could include a kajillion photos of all the different butterflies we’ve been seeing around, but I just haven’t been good enough with my camera. Yet. Still, I captured this bad boy (or girl), just for you!
